Ape-X is a strength training and nutrition app made by Yocloud Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (number 09436816). This page says what we collect, why, who else sees it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.
If you're under 18, there's a shorter version written for you at ape-x.co/under-18.html. It says the same things in plainer words.
What we collect
Everything on this list is something you type into the app. We don't buy data about you and we don't take anything from your phone that you haven't entered.
- Your account: email address, password (we never see it, only a scrambled version is stored) and the display name you pick.
- Your date of birth and country. Both are asked once, at sign-up. Country comes from your phone's region setting, not from GPS.
- Your body and goals: sex, height, weight, goal weight, your training goal, activity level, experience, how many days a week you train and for how long, where you train, injuries, exercises you want left out, foods you avoid.
- What you log: workouts (exercises, sets, reps, weight), bodyweight, food (what, how much, calories and macros, barcodes), calorie and macro targets, recovery check-ins (sleep, soreness, stress), other activity, days off and the reason, XP, notes, custom exercises and saved plans.
- Messages you send through the in-app feedback box, with your app version.
- A daily count of how many AI food lookups you've made, so we can apply the daily limit.
Some of this is health data (weight, injuries, sleep, food, soreness, stress). UK law treats health data as a special category, so we ask for your explicit agreement to store it when you sign up. You can withdraw that agreement at any time by deleting your account.
Notes and feedback are free text. Anything you type there is stored as you typed it, so please don't put in things you'd rather we didn't hold.
Food photos
If you use the photo scan, the photo is sent through our server to an AI model that reads the food in it and sends back an estimate. Before the photo leaves our server we strip out everything hidden inside the file (the metadata, which can include where and when it was taken). We don't keep the photo. Only the food estimate is saved, as a normal food log entry.
What we don't collect
No GPS location. No contacts. No card details (the app has no payments yet). No advertising identifiers. No tracking across other apps or websites.
Why we use it
To run your account, build your training plan, work out your calorie and macro targets, show your progress, and answer your feedback. Every question the app asks feeds one of those. There's no marketing profile and no adverts.
In legal terms: we process your account and log data because it's needed to provide the service you signed up for (performance of a contract). We process health data with your explicit consent. We keep short-lived technical logs on our servers because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the service secure.
If you're under 18
You must be at least 13 to use Ape-X. In some countries the minimum is 14, 15 or 16, and the app checks that against your phone's country setting. We use your age to keep your calorie targets safe: under 18, the automatic target never goes below your body's resting energy need; under 16, any calorie cut is kept small and the countdown to goal weight is hidden. If you type in your own target, the app uses your number as it is.
The numbers in Ape-X are estimates. They aren't medical advice. If you have a health condition or you're not sure a target is right for you, check it with a doctor or a qualified coach.
Who else sees it
Other Ape-X users can't see anything about you. There's no feed, no leaderboard and no messaging. We don't sell your data and we don't share it for advertising. A small number of companies help us run the app:
| Who | What they get |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Stores your data and handles sign-in, on servers in London. Each account can only reach its own rows. |
| Anthropic (United States) | Runs the AI lookups. For a restaurant or brand search it receives the text you typed and may run a web search on it. For a photo scan it receives the photo with metadata removed. For the weekly recovery insight it receives six averages (score, sleep, stress and similar) with nothing that identifies you. It never receives your name, email, age, weight or account id. Anthropic is outside the UK, so this is an international transfer; we send only what that one lookup needs and rely on Anthropic's data processing terms for the transfer. |
| Open Food Facts | A free, open food database. Receives the product name or barcode you searched for, nothing else. |
| USDA FoodData Central | A free US food database used for "log from scratch" searches. Called directly from your phone with your search text, so it sees your phone's internet address like any website you visit. |
| Expo | Delivers app updates and sees your device type and app version. |
| Apple and Google | Distribute the app through their stores under their own privacy policies. |
We'll share data with authorities if the law requires it, and we'll tell you unless the law says we can't.
How long we keep it
While your account exists. If you don't sign in for 24 months we'll email you, and if we still hear nothing we'll delete the account. If you joined the waiting list or the tester list on this website, that email is kept in a separate database and deleted 12 months after public launch, or sooner if you ask. Technical logs on our servers are kept for a short time for security and then deleted.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected, have it deleted, object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent. Here's how each works in practice:
- Delete everything: in the app, open Profile, scroll to Danger Zone, tap Delete account. Your account and every log are removed straight away and can't be recovered. This doesn't touch the website waiting list, which lives separately; email us for that.
- Correct something: most fields you can change in the app. Date of birth and country are locked after sign-up, so if you made a mistake, email us and we'll fix it by hand.
- Get a copy: email us and we'll send your data as a file.
If you think we've handled your data badly, tell us first and we'll try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll say so in the app and update the date at the top. Small wording fixes just update the date.
